Nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Northern California, Hearts Landing Ranch is a haven of healing where the remarkable power of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is harnessed. As a therapist privileged to work with these magnificent creatures, I have witnessed the profound impact of EAP on individuals seeking solace and growth. Join me as we explore the transformative journey offered at Hearts Landing Ranch, where rescued horses play a vital role in supporting mental health services.

Rescued Horses: Partners in Healing:
The presence of rescued horses at Hearts Landing Ranch holds a special significance in our therapeutic work. Just as our clients have experienced hardship and adversity, these horses have also endured challenging circumstances. Through their own journey of healing, the horses exemplify resilience, forgiveness, and the power of second chances. In partnering with these incredible animals, our clients learn that their own past does not define their future, and they can forge a path toward healing and renewal.

Unveiling the Healing Power of EAP:
Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) at Hearts Landing Ranch transcends traditional talk therapy, immersing clients in a dynamic and transformative experience. In the presence of our rescued horses, individuals are invited to explore their emotions, patterns of behavior, and inner narratives. The horses serve as mirrors, reflecting back the client's authentic self and offering immediate feedback on their thoughts, emotions, and non-verbal cues. This real-time interaction creates a powerful and visceral experience, enabling clients to gain deeper insights into their own patterns and facilitating meaningful change.
Through the experiential nature of EAP, clients develop essential skills for emotional regulation, self-awareness, and building healthy relationships. As they navigate the activities with the horses, such as setting boundaries, establishing trust, and practicing effective communication, clients learn to transfer these skills to their everyday lives. The profound bond formed between clients and horses nurtures a sense of connection, empathy, and attunement, which are vital components of emotional well-being and personal growth.
At Hearts Landing Ranch, the healing power of EAP extends beyond the individual sessions. Clients often express how the presence of the rescued horses creates a sanctuary of unconditional acceptance and non-judgment. The horses, with their gentle and intuitive nature, offer solace, support, and a space for emotional release. As clients form authentic connections with these magnificent beings, they experience a profound sense of being seen, heard, and understood—a transformative experience that instills a renewed sense of hope and empowers them to embrace their own journey of healing.
Through Equine Assisted Psychotherapy at Hearts Landing Ranch, individuals discover that the path to healing is not only found in words but also in the profound connection with the horses. As therapists, we are privileged to witness the transformative power of these rescued horses as they guide our clients towards self-discovery, resilience, and the restoration of their mental well-being. Together, with the horses as our partners, we embark on a profound journey of healing, where individuals uncover their inner strength, rewrite their narratives, and embrace a brighter and more empowered future.

A Holistic Approach to Healing:
At Hearts Landing Ranch, EAP is just one facet of our comprehensive mental health services. Alongside the transformative work with horses, our experienced therapists offer a range of evidence-based therapies, including talk therapy, trauma-focused therapy, and group therapy. The combination of these modalities with the presence of rescued horses creates a holistic and integrative approach to healing, fostering personal growth and empowerment.

Conclusion:
Hearts Landing Ranch stands as a sanctuary of healing, where the profound connection between humans and rescued horses paves the way for transformation. Through Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and a range of therapeutic modalities, we guide individuals on their healing journey, instilling hope, resilience, and self-discovery. As we witness the growth and empowerment of our clients, we honor the invaluable role of these rescued horses, who not only teach us about healing but also remind us of the power of compassion and second chances. Together, let us embrace the extraordinary journey of healing with Hearts Landing Ranch and our rescued equine partners.

Finding Comfort and Guidance in the Equine Herd: A Client's First Visit to Hearts Landing Ranch

The arena is filled with boys. Well, male horses. 3 big ones and 3 minis. Two of the minis are twins and they are following each other around. Two of the bigger horses are white and one is black/brown. One of the white ones (the one with the black specks) put his muzzle on my belly. I think he knows that I am pregnant.

As I stand there in the arena surrounded by these beautiful animals, I can't help but feel a sense of peace wash over me. I've heard about the healing power of horses, but I never truly understood it until now. The way they move and interact with one another is truly magical. It's as if they have a sixth sense and can detect what we need without us even saying a word.

As the white horse with black specks nuzzles my belly, I can't help but feel a surge of emotion. I'm pregnant and this horse seems to know it. As someone who has experienced sexual trauma in the past, the idea of having a baby girl fills me with anxiety and fear. What if I can't protect her? What if something happens to her like it did to me? These thoughts race through my mind as I stand there, but as I look around at the horses, I feel a sense of calm.

This experience has made me realize the power of equine-assisted therapy. Being surrounded by these gentle creatures has helped me feel more in touch with myself and my emotions. It's given me a safe space to explore my fears and anxieties, and to work through them in a way that feels natural and healing. As I leave the ranch that day, I feel hopeful for the first time in a long time. I know that I still have a lot of work to do, but with the help of these amazing horses and the compassionate therapists at Hearts Landing Ranch, I know that anything is possible. (Client)

"Let's Talk About It: Tips for Parents to Start the Conversation on Mental Health with Their Kids"

4/2/2023

Mental health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, and it's essential for parents to have conversations with their children about it. Mental health issues can be a significant source of stress and anxiety for young people, and it's important for parents to be proactive in discussing these issues with their children. Here are some ideas and tips for parents to talk with their kids about mental health.
Of course, it is not uncommon for children to be hesitant or reluctant to talk about their mental health. If your child is not willing to talk, it's important to respect their boundaries and give them space. However, there are some things you can try to encourage them to open up:
  1. Try a different approach: If your child isn't comfortable talking face-to-face, try writing a letter or email to them, or even talking while doing an activity like going for a walk or cooking together.
  2. Use open-ended questions: Instead of asking yes or no questions, try asking open-ended questions that encourage your child to express themselves.
  3. For example:
  • What's been on your mind lately?
  • How are you feeling today?
  • What's something that's been bothering you lately?
  • Can you tell me more about what you're feeling?
  • What do you think would help you feel better right now?
  • How can I support you?

   4. Share your own experiences with mental health in an age-appropriate way. Let your child know     that it's normal to have ups and downs and that it's okay to talk about them.

  5. If your child is still hesitant to talk, consider seeking help from a mental health professional.
A therapist or counselor can provide a safe space for your child to express themselves and work through any issues they may be facing.

Remember to listen actively and be present when your child is sharing their thoughts and feelings. Try to avoid interrupting or offering advice, and instead focus on validating their emotions and providing a safe space for them to express themselves. By using open-ended questions, you can help your child feel heard and understood, which can be a powerful tool in promoting positive mental health.
Talking about mental health with your children is essential for their overall well-being. Normalize the conversation, create a safe space, listen, and validate, educate yourself and your child, encourage self-care, seek professional help if necessary, and be open and available. By having these conversations and providing support, you can help your child develop a healthy attitude towards mental health and ensure they get the help they need when they need it.

"Making a Positive Impact"
Donna Eckwortzel recognized - Hearts Landing Ranch

We are thrilled to announce that Hearts Landing Ranch has been recognized by Granite Bay View / and Placer County Supervisor -Suzanne Jones . This is very exciting for HLR and our community, as EAP (Equine Assisted Psychotherapy) provides invaluable mental health support to those in need.

At Hearts Landing Ranch, we specialize in providing therapeutic services to those struggling with mental health issues. Our team is dedicated to helping our clients improve their overall wellbeing, and the use of rescue horses as a therapy tool has proven to be incredibly effective.

Through EAP, clients are able to build a connection with our horses, and learn to trust and communicate with them. This in turn helps our clients learn to trust themselves, and build self-confidence. We have seen first hand how EAP can help individuals who are struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, and more, to improve their quality of life.

We are especially proud of Donna Eckwortzel, the founder of Hearts Landing Ranch and the driving force behind this recognition. Donna and her team have dedicated themselves to helping others, and have worked tirelessly to make Hearts Landing Ranch a safe and supportive place for clients to receive the mental health help they need.

We strongly believe that everyone should have access to quality mental health services, and we are so proud to be part of this movement. We look forward to continuing to help our community and make a positive difference in people’s lives.

How to choose an Equine Assisted program that is right for you. - Client Testimonial

Why Equine Assisted Therapy?
The human-horse connection is a special one. It can go beyond the physical, and into the emotional and spiritual realms. Horses are known for their calming effect on people, and for their ability to help people find peace. In recent years, equine therapy has become more popular as a form of treatment for mental health needs. In some cases, it’s used in conjunction with traditional therapy to treat conditions such as depression, anxiety, and many other mental health challenges.

What are the Best Equine Assisted Therapies?
Equine-assisted psychotherapy programs use horses to help people with physical and psychological issues. The client will have the opportunity to bond with the horse and work through their issues while they interact with the horses.
The benefits of horse assistance include increased trust and intimacy in human-animal interactions, which may lead to enhanced patient responsiveness to psychological interventions.
Horses can also reduce stress levels in humans by providing positive social interactions, prompting self-regulation and promoting positive coping strategies through the reduction of chronic psychological stress.

PTSD- Military Sexual Trauma (MST)

Hearts Landing Ranch is “building a community to impact a community”.  This includes a newer Military PTSD program.
Picture

According to the Veterans Association 1 in 5 women will experience sexual abuse while serving in the military.
While the statistic for men is 1 in a 100.

This data coupled, with the tragic statistic that  20 of our veterans are committing suicide every day suggests a very large need for support .
Of course, every person and situation are different, but HLR prepares an 8-week curriculum to address the unique situational needs.  This program includes a licensed therapist, and an equine specialist along with 1 – 10 horses.
All the work at Hearts Landing Ranch is on the ground with the therapy team.

This Equine Assisted Psychotherapy provides a dynamic opportunity for clients to recognize behavior or trauma and find solutions to heal.

What is Equine Assisted Therapy?

Hi there- and thanks for taking a moment to visit our Blog!

I decided to share another book that I feel really explains at a high level what Equine Assisted Psychotherapy is and how it can help people suffering from various mental health issues,

The book is called “Riding Home – The Power of Horses to Heal”
by Tim Hayes. I read this book last year when I started volunteering at Hearts Landing Ranch here in Granite Bay, CA.

I was interested in learning more about EAP and how to interact with these magnificent animals.

In the book, Tim explains EAP and shares stories outlining and supporting  the ideas he presents.
Tim says, “Being with a horse compels one to acknowledge who they really are and not who they would prefer to be for others. It is only by  seeing and accepting one’s true self, that a person can begin to heal their emotional wounds.  If you don’t know that you, your behavior, or your attitude is the problem, then you need someone or  something to show that to you.”

This is where horses can be an invaluable tool in the EAP process as they act as mirrors to our emotions.
Horses can do this without criticism, judgement, or shame.
Bottom line – Horses are a powerful partner in the therapeutic process and can help people find their true path.

If you have an interest in this topic, I highly suggest this book!

Practice of journaling for mental health

9/23/2022

Over 15 years ago, I started really journaling.  This wasn't a "dear diary" entry every now and then, it was a commitment to journal 3 pages every day, first thing in the morning without thinking...even if I didn't feel like it.  I learned this through a book called "The Artist's Way".   Some days I hated it and one particular morning I simply wrote "I don't feel like writing" for a whole page and then, shazam, the words flowed!

For the first year, I would say, journaling without thinking allowed space for a lot of trauma to come out that was stuffed down for decades.

I highly recommend that book - artist or not, we are creative beings - and doing it with a trustworthy and fun friend. At the end of the chapter she always provided prompts to continue to dive deeper into who you were meant to be and especially being present.

If you want to get started right away however, I've included a few journal prompts below. The prompts can be a question or statement that makes you think about your life.
The goal of a prompt is to help you decide what to write in your journal by giving directions and guiding your thinking.

Not into writing or want to enjoy this process with your kids, see some prompts below.  When the kids were little, we had a little red journal on the dining table and would ask them to share one thing they were grateful for that day ....and one thing they wish they could do differently.   I always loved the discussion (no judgement parents, just write what they say down) and keeping a memory of those days.

  • Write down one good thing that happened to you today.
  • What are five personality traits that you are most thankful for?
  • What about your upbringing are you most grateful for?
  • Are you happy with how your day turned out? Can you do better tomorrow?
  • Name 5 things you are doing well currently.
  • What family members are you most grateful for? Write about what makes them special.
  • What is something nice you did for another person today or this week?
  • Who or what in your life are you happy to have let go?
