Hello and happy Summer!

I wanted to share two grateful clients who have benefitted from HLR Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy and how impactful your gifts to Hearts Landing Ranch are.

Once such client, "Mikayla" who has seen such dramatic improvement in her mental health, is so thankful for her scholarship because she is scraping together her contribution for sessions with rolls of quarters.  Mikayla could not receive this impactful Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy without a scholarship from donors like you.

Another client from a homeless program, "Rosy" shared, “Recently I saw HLR staff at a Placer Mental Health event and they had several polished rocks on their table. I chose the one that simply said HOPE."

"From Panic to Peace: My Journey of Healing through Exposure Therapy"

"Every time I stepped foot into TJ Maxx, Homegoods, or any similar store, my mood would instantly shift, my palms would become sweaty, and my heart would race. I felt an overwhelming urge to leave, yet I couldn't understand why these reactions were happening.

Then, I received a candle as a gift for my new apartment. As soon as I smelled it, I was transported back to the same intense emotions I experienced whenever I entered those stores.

Thankfully, I confided in my therapist about this peculiar connection. Together, we embarked on a journey to unravel the root cause of my distress. Through our discussions, it became clear that the scent in those stores and the fragrance of the gifted candle were an exact match to the scent that permeated the air when I was sexually assaulted.

With this revelation, my therapist and I decided to explore exposure therapy as a means to overcome my fears. Exposure therapy, a guided therapeutic approach, aims to help individuals confront their fears and reduce avoidance behaviors by gradually exposing them to the feared objects or situations.
During our sessions, we employed various exposure therapy methods. We deliberately surrounded myself with the triggering scent when I felt mentally prepared, and I would sit with it while journaling or intentionally creating new, positive memories associated with the smell.

It is essential to note that exposure therapy should only be undertaken under the supervision of a licensed therapist trained in this specific treatment modality.
I am immensely grateful for the entire process, as I now understand the cause of my reactions and have acquired strategies to guide myself through them. As time progresses and I engage in more exposure exercises, my reactions diminish little by little. I am currently in the process of forging new, positive associations with the scent that once haunted me."
Exposure therapy has emerged as a powerful tool for for me in overcoming my fears and traumatic experiences, and its impact can be further amplified when combined with equine-assisted psychotherapy programs.

At Hearts Landing Ranch, a sanctuary for rescued horses, I discovered a remarkable synergy between exposure therapy and the healing power of these majestic creatures.

As I reflect on my transformative journey, I am grateful for the profound impact of exposure therapy and the healing synergy found at Hearts Landing Ranch. Their equine-assisted programs not only provided me with a path towards recovery but also opened doors to a life of newfound strength, connection, and inner peace."

Unleashing Inner Strength: How Equine Assisted Psycotherapy empowers veterans to overcome ptsd

Mark had always dreamed of serving his country, and when the opportunity came to join the Army, he jumped at the chance. He underwent rigorous training, both physically and mentally, preparing him for the challenges he would face. Little did he know, the greatest battle was yet to come.

During his deployment, Mark experienced traumatic events that would forever change him. The sights, sounds, and constant state of alertness ingrained themselves deep within his psyche, leaving him with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) upon returning home.

Mark's once-vibrant spirit became overshadowed by anxiety, nightmares, and a sense of detachment from the world around him. Simple tasks that used to be routine now triggered overwhelming stress and panic. His relationships suffered, as he struggled to connect with loved ones who couldn't possibly understand the horrors he had witnessed.

Desperate for a solution, Mark began his search for healing. Traditional therapy provided some relief, but he yearned for something more, something that could reach deeper into his soul and help him reclaim his life. That's when he discovered equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP).

With a mix of curiosity and skepticism, Mark embarked on his first EAP session. He stepped into the serene world of a Hearts Landing Ranch, surrounded by majestic horses. His therapist, Sarah, introduced him to Mid-Knight, a gentle yet powerful horse with a knowing gaze.

As Mark approached Mid-Knight, he felt a spark of connection. He sensed the horse's calm energy and realized they shared a language beyond words. Sarah explained that horses, being prey animals, possess a heightened ability to read human emotions and intentions. They respond to the authentic presence of individuals, reflecting their emotional state.

Over the course of their sessions together, Mark learned to navigate his PTSD symptoms with the help of Mid-Knight. They engaged in various activities, from grooming and leading to non-verbal communication exercises. Through these interactions, Mark discovered a newfound sense of trust, not only in Mid-Knight but also in himself.

When Mark's anxiety spiked, Mid-Knight mirrored his unease, subtly urging him to find inner calm. By regulating his breathing and focusing on the present moment, Mark witnessed the transformation in Mid-Knight’s response. The horse's body language shifted from tension to relaxation, mirroring the changes within Mark himself.

These experiences provided Mark with tangible evidence of his capacity to heal and regain control over his emotions. The bond he formed with Mid-Knight and the progress he made in their sessions became a source of hope and inspiration. Through the equine-human connection, Mark found solace and a renewed sense of purpose.

Outside of the therapy sessions, Mark began incorporating the lessons he learned from Mid-Knight into his daily life. He practiced grounding techniques, such as mindfulness and deep breathing, whenever he felt overwhelmed. The simple act of touching base with the present moment allowed him to reclaim his power and navigate triggers with resilience.

As time went on, Mark experienced a significant shift in his well-being. His nightmares became less frequent, and his anxiety gradually subsided. Though the journey of healing was not linear, he was equipped with the tools to confront the challenges that arose.

Inspired by his own transformation, Mark decided to share his story and advocate for EAP as a powerful therapy for fellow veterans struggling with PTSD. He partnered with organizations dedicated to supporting veterans' mental health, spreading awareness of the profound impact that horses can have on healing invisible wounds.

Mark's journey with EAP continues to this day, as he cherishes the ongoing connection he shares with Mid-Knight and the other horses at the ranch. Through the mutual exchange of healing, they support one another and serve as beacons of hope for those seeking solace in the aftermath of trauma.

If you or someone you know is a veteran experiencing the weight of PTSD, consider exploring the transformative potential of equine-assisted psychotherapy at Hearts Landing Ranch.

Finding Comfort and Guidance in the Equine Herd: A Client's First Visit to Hearts Landing Ranch

5/19/2023

The arena is filled with boys. Well, male horses. 3 big ones and 3 minis. Two of the minis are twins and they are following each other around. Two of the bigger horses are white and one is black/brown. One of the white ones (the one with the black specks) put his muzzle on my belly. I think he knows that I am pregnant.

As I stand there in the arena surrounded by these beautiful animals, I can't help but feel a sense of peace wash over me. I've heard about the healing power of horses, but I never truly understood it until now. The way they move and interact with one another is truly magical. It's as if they have a sixth sense and can detect what we need without us even saying a word.

As the white horse with black specks nuzzles my belly, I can't help but feel a surge of emotion. I'm pregnant and this horse seems to know it. As someone who has experienced sexual trauma in the past, the idea of having a baby girl fills me with anxiety and fear. What if I can't protect her? What if something happens to her like it did to me? These thoughts race through my mind as I stand there, but as I look around at the horses, I feel a sense of calm.

This experience has made me realize the power of equine-assisted therapy. Being surrounded by these gentle creatures has helped me feel more in touch with myself and my emotions. It's given me a safe space to explore my fears and anxieties, and to work through them in a way that feels natural and healing. As I leave the ranch that day, I feel hopeful for the first time in a long time. I know that I still have a lot of work to do, but with the help of these amazing horses and the compassionate therapists at Hearts Landing Ranch, I know that anything is possible. (Client)

"Let's Talk About It: Tips for Parents to Start the Conversation on Mental Health with Their Kids"

4/2/2023

Picture
Mental health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, and it's essential for parents to have conversations with their children about it. Mental health issues can be a significant source of stress and anxiety for young people, and it's important for parents to be proactive in discussing these issues with their children. Here are some ideas and tips for parents to talk with their kids about mental health.
Of course, it is not uncommon for children to be hesitant or reluctant to talk about their mental health. If your child is not willing to talk, it's important to respect their boundaries and give them space. However, there are some things you can try to encourage them to open up:
  1. Try a different approach: If your child isn't comfortable talking face-to-face, try writing a letter or email to them, or even talking while doing an activity like going for a walk or cooking together.
  2. Use open-ended questions: Instead of asking yes or no questions, try asking open-ended questions that encourage your child to express themselves.
  3. For example:
  • What's been on your mind lately?
  • How are you feeling today?
  • What's something that's been bothering you lately?
  • Can you tell me more about what you're feeling?
  • What do you think would help you feel better right now?
  • How can I support you?

   4. Share your own experiences with mental health in an age-appropriate way. Let your child know     that it's normal to have ups and downs and that it's okay to talk about them.

  5. If your child is still hesitant to talk, consider seeking help from a mental health professional.
A therapist or counselor can provide a safe space for your child to express themselves and work through any issues they may be facing.

Remember to listen actively and be present when your child is sharing their thoughts and feelings. Try to avoid interrupting or offering advice, and instead focus on validating their emotions and providing a safe space for them to express themselves. By using open-ended questions, you can help your child feel heard and understood, which can be a powerful tool in promoting positive mental health.
Talking about mental health with your children is essential for their overall well-being. Normalize the conversation, create a safe space, listen, and validate, educate yourself and your child, encourage self-care, seek professional help if necessary, and be open and available. By having these conversations and providing support, you can help your child develop a healthy attitude towards mental health and ensure they get the help they need when they need it.

"Making a Positive Impact"
Donna Eckwortzel recognized - Hearts Landing Ranch

We are thrilled to announce that Hearts Landing Ranch has been recognized by Granite Bay View / and Placer County Supervisor -Suzanne Jones . This is very exciting for HLR and our community, as EAP (Equine Assisted Psychotherapy) provides invaluable mental health support to those in need.

At Hearts Landing Ranch, we specialize in providing therapeutic services to those struggling with mental health issues. Our team is dedicated to helping our clients improve their overall wellbeing, and the use of rescue horses as a therapy tool has proven to be incredibly effective.

Through EAP, clients are able to build a connection with our horses, and learn to trust and communicate with them. This in turn helps our clients learn to trust themselves, and build self-confidence. We have seen first hand how EAP can help individuals who are struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, and more, to improve their quality of life.

We are especially proud of Donna Eckwortzel, the founder of Hearts Landing Ranch and the driving force behind this recognition. Donna and her team have dedicated themselves to helping others, and have worked tirelessly to make Hearts Landing Ranch a safe and supportive place for clients to receive the mental health help they need.

We strongly believe that everyone should have access to quality mental health services, and we are so proud to be part of this movement. We look forward to continuing to help our community and make a positive difference in people’s lives.
