Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy Sessions that meant the most to Rosy were exercises designed to build connection, exhibit clear communication and create boundaries with the horse. Rosy spent 2 Session in the round pen. Rosy had a 6-ft crop to create distance and pressure for the horse to respond to. During her first Session, she was unable to get the horse to respond or move at all. Reluctant to use the crop for fear she would scare or hurt the horse, Rosy's “Aha!” moment came the second Session when her therapist asked, “What if you treated the crop like a boundary meant to keep you safe? How would you do this different?” With this new perspective, she was able to successfully complete the activity. From that point on, she saw how deep Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy could take her in a very short time, and she was able to get close to identifying and overcoming some of her trauma in just a few sessions! She states, “It showed me that I was safe enough to be able to go that deep, that fast, and trust the process of healing.” Still homeless and worrying constantly about her present challenges and future opportunities, she kept in touch with HLR staff with life updates in the months following her Sessions. Roughly half a year later, with the help of her County Case Management Team, she applied for and secured supported housing, allowing her to live independently, and to even get her emotional support animal back. Due to all the hard work we saw Rosy put in, we invited her back for another 8-week scholarship. We were amazed at her tenacity to do the work even when things were far from easy. Rosy didn't drive. One day when I entered the office, Nicole asked do you want to hear something fantastic?! "OF COURSE", I said. Nicole shared that when Rosy couldn't get a ride, instead of cancelling, she walked 1.5 HOURS to come to her appointment AND arrived early. Not just that morning, but a second time as well. That's what we call an impactful program! We are so grateful when we can serve people like Rosy, who want to do the work, and just need an opportunity to do it. Because of your generosity Together, WE are Turning Trauma into Triumph! Donna Source: [ Link ]
